The Balkan Image Archive is a project dedicated to creating a crowdsourced digital archive of vernacular photography from the Balkans - family photos, studio portraits and any other visual records kept in the intimacy of the home. Of interest are both archival photographs from the Balkans, as well as archival images from around the globe of any diaspora communities from the region.
The project began in the last months of 2020 and is currently hosted on Instagram. My hope is that over time the archive will grow into a rich collection of images with a dedicated digital space that will serve as a resource to research, study and reflect on, encouraging artistic production and public engagement.
